Chapter 13: The Silver Blade

Dale Mercer walked toward me across the broken glass, and no one in the lobby stopped him.

His wolves stood behind him, and Camille stood at his shoulder with her chin up.

"Greaves blood," Dale said. "I wondered if you'd ever show your face."

"You killed my father," I said.

"I did." He smiled with the scarred half of his mouth. "He was slow at the end. I've waited four years for a daughter slow enough to stand where I can reach her."

Behind me, Vaughn growled low in his chest.

I raised one hand, and the growl stopped.

It was the strangest feeling I had ever had.

A hundred wolves had gone quiet because my fingers moved.

"You came into our house," I said. "You broke our doors and you put your boots on our Alpha."

"He's not your Alpha," Dale said. "He's your husband, and you threw him away."

Camille laughed softly.

"She did, darling," she said. "She signed him off like a lease."

I looked at her for the first time.

She was still wearing her pink brooch and her white coat, and she was smiling at me.

"You shared a bed with the man who killed my father," I said. "Did you kiss him goodnight, Camille?"

Her smile slipped.

Dale's hand moved faster than I could follow.

A blade came out of his sleeve, a long silver-edged knife, and he threw it at my chest.

I saw the dark film on the edge.

Wolfsbane.

I had made the antidote for it in my own lab, and I knew exactly what it looked like on steel.

I had time to think that I would not get my arm up.

Then a body hit me from the side and drove me across the marble.
