Chapter 19: Thirty Thousand Feet

The cabin lights went low an hour after takeoff, and the other passengers in the front cabin pulled their blankets up and slept.

Corbin sat in 1B with his leg stretched into the aisle.

I knelt on the carpet in front of him with the first-aid kit open on my knees.

"Hold still," I said.

"I am holding still."

"You're shaking."

I cut the trouser leg open from the knee to the hip with the little scissors.

The old bandage had soaked through.

I peeled it back, and the stitches the doctor had put in were torn along half their length.

I cleaned the skin with a cold wipe, and Corbin sucked air through his teeth.

His thigh was hard and hot under my palm.

I had touched that skin ten thousand times, and I had never once been the one to hurt it.

"Why did you come to the airport?" I asked.

"Because I didn't want you to be alone with him."

"Dale?"

"Everyone." He watched my hands. "Every time you were in danger, I was somewhere else."

I pressed the clean gauze over the wound.

"Cassandra," he said.

"Don't."

"I need to say it, or I'll say it wrong later." His voice was rough. "I heard you."

My fingers went still.

"In the Rockies. I heard you talking to my wolf. You said, 'Hold on, I'm here, I've got you.' You said it for three nights."

"I know what I said."

"I heard your voice when I woke up, and I knew it." He shut his eyes. "I knew it was you, and I told myself it was the fever. Because if it was you, I'd have to be grateful to a woman I'd been paired to by fate, and I didn't want to be paired to anyone."
