Chapter 24: The Pack Crowns Its Alpha
Dale Mercer stood in the manor's lower gate with sixty Redmaw wolves in a half circle behind him.
His wrists were still wrapped in splints.
"There she is," he said when he saw me come down the drive. "The little heir."
The old owner's guards held the iron gate shut between us, and a line of Stonehaven Elders stood behind them in their dark coats.
I walked up to the bars.
Corbin walked beside me.
He was not three steps back this time, and nobody in the drive said a word about it.
"I came for the ring," Dale said. "Give it to me, or I'll take it off your hand."
"With those wrists?" I said.
His wolves laughed nervously.
Dale's face went dark.
"I'll make you a deal," he said. "A challenge, by the old law. You and me, one on one, on this road. If I win, the ring and the pack are mine. If you win, my wolves go home."
"And if I win, you die."
"Of course," he said.
The Elders murmured.
The oldest one lifted her hand and said, "The challenge is lawful. She may refuse."
"I won't," I said.
Corbin turned to me.
"Cassie."
"I know," I said.
"Let me."
"You're my Beta," I said. "You swore not to lie to me, and you swore to obey me. So hold the gate."
His jaw clenched.
He stepped back and put one hand on the iron bar, and I felt the new bond pull tight between us, steady and calm.
The guards swung the gate open.
I stepped onto the road.
Dale shifted all at once, and he came out of his clothes as a huge red-brown wolf with a torn lip.
He leaped.
I let him come.
I let my own wolf rise, gold-eyed and silver-furred, and I met him in the air.
