Chapter 4: Muted

I took the border road myself at dawn, in the lead truck, with the serum crates strapped down behind me.

I had not told Corbin. I had told nobody except Vaughn, and I had changed the departure time by an hour.

Mist hung over the forest. The road was empty.

Then two armored trucks pulled out of the trees ahead of me and slewed sideways across the asphalt.

Both carried the red open jaw of the Redmaw Pack.

"Stop the truck, Greaves girl," a man bellowed through a megaphone. "Hand over the serum and your father's daughter gets to walk home."

I stamped on the accelerator.

Crossbow bolts hammered my windows and the glass went white with cracks.

I jerked the wheel hard left and slapped the red emergency button on the dash.

It patched straight through to Corbin's private line.

A recorded voice answered: "The user you are calling has muted all incoming transmissions."

I pressed it again.

The same voice answered.

I pressed it a third time, and my hands were shaking now.

Everyone in the pack knew the Alpha never turned his comms off, except when he was alone with one person.

The windshield burst inward.

A bolt with a silver tip went through the window and into my right shoulder, and the pain was white and total.

Wolfsbane.

It ran into my blood like fire, and the truck swerved as I lost my grip with one hand.

I slammed against the door and thought: I am going to die on this road because he turned off his phone.
