Chapter 5: Four Kings at Supper
The smith came to the guest wing at dusk with the collar in both hands.
It was a thick band of black iron with a ring at the front for a chain.
I stood in the corridor outside my mother's door and looked at it.
Behind the door she slept at last, in a clean bed with a soldier on each side.
"Alpha's order," the smith said. He did not meet my eyes. "It goes on at the neck before supper."
"No," King Evander said from the stairs.
He came down slowly, buttoning his black coat.
"Your Majesty, the Alpha..."
"The Alpha made her my servant for three nights. A collar on a guest's servant tells every king at that table that Greyhollow marks the Crown's household like a dog." He held out his hand. "I'll carry it back to him myself."
The smith gave it up fast, with relief.
At the Alpha's table that evening, the Alpha said nothing about the collar.
He did not look at me, and he did not look at the King's hand on the iron band that now lay beside his plate.
He lifted his cup.
I stood behind the King's chair with a wine jug, as I had been told, and watched four kings eat.
The King of the High Crown sat at my father's right.
Beside him sat the Eastern King, a heavy man with rings on every finger.
Across from them sat the young King of the Marsh, who looked nervous and kept spilling gravy.
At my father's left, in the best chair, sat the old King of Fenmark, a pale old wolf with a white beard and yellow eyes that did not blink enough.
He had been staring at me for a quarter of an hour.
I filled his cup.
"You're the one," the old King said. "The thrall who broke Osric's girl."
"Yes, Your Majesty."
"I like a servant who bites." His hand shot out and closed around my left wrist, over the cuff.
