Chapter 11: The Chair at the Table

I didn't answer him.

I lay awake until the window went grey with his arm heavy across my waist, and when I finally slept, I dreamed of stones.

At eleven, I put on the grey wool coat that smelled of rosemary, and I braided my hair back tight.

Eamon had gone before sunrise, quietly, closing the door behind him.

Fergus was on the porch with two cups of coffee.

He took one look at my face and handed me the larger.

"I won't ask," he said.

"Thank you."

"I'll just say that if you need an Alpha in the council room who owes you nothing and wants nothing, I'm available."

"You want something."

"I want a great many things," Fergus said. "None of them are the council."

That made me smile, and he looked pleased with himself all the way to Blackmoor Hall.

The great hall had been cleared of tables, except the long one on the dais.

Twelve Alphas of the circle sat along it, in their autumn coats, with their pack seals set in front of them.

I knew the east-range woman and the gaunt northern man.

I knew none of the others.

Linus stood at my side in a freshly ironed shirt, and behind us, the three hundred wolves of Blackmoor packed the back walls.

The Luna's chair, at Eamon's right hand, was empty.

Eamon stood behind his own chair, in a black shirt with the left shoulder bandaged under the cloth.

He looked at me and said nothing at all.

"We are met," said the east-range Alpha, rapping her seal on the wood. "The Alpha of Blackmoor has asked for the floor before business."

Eamon stepped out from behind the table.

He didn't go to the dais.

He walked down onto the floor of the hall, among his own people.
