Chapter 19: The Question
"Anything," Eamon said.
"Don't say that yet."
I took a breath.
"Take me to the east room. Stay the whole night."
"I want to be the one who decides everything that happens in it."
His chair creaked as his whole body went still.
"The east room," he said.
"I spent a year in it being quiet. I want one night in it being loud."
He stood up slowly.
"Yes," he said.
We walked up the ridge in the dark, and he kept to my left.
The hall was asleep.
The little room at the end of the east corridor was as I had left it.
It held a narrow bed, a grey blanket, and a hook by the door where my coat had hung.
Nobody had burned it, and nobody had moved a thing.
Eamon stopped on the threshold with his hand braced against the frame.
"I didn't come in here once," he said. "Not once in a year."
"I know."
"I'll stand here till you say."
"Come in."
He ducked under the lintel, and the room shrank around him.
I lit the little stove, shut the door and locked it, and turned the key on the inside.
Then I stood in front of him and undid the sling.
I eased the bandaged arm out of it, slow, and laid my palm over the burned shoulder.
