Chapter 13: The Folder
I picked the hair up off the carpet and wound it around my finger.
It was long, and so pale it looked white in the grey light.
Torin was at the door in his trousers before I turned around.
His nose was already working. His eyes had gone gold.
"Camille," he said.
"Maybe."
"Orla."
"Maybe," I said again. "She has a key to this floor. So do your mother's guards."
He looked at me for a long moment.
"You don't want it to be her."
"She brought me soup," I said. "She found my mother's garden tools."
"She also knew about the council a day before I did."
I put my sweater on.
"Then we ask her," I said. "To her face."
Camille's suite was on the thirty-eighth floor, one below ours. She opened the door in a white robe with her hair down her back, and she looked from my face to Torin's and went the color of her robe.
"Oh," she said. "You know."
"Know what?" Torin said.
She stepped back from the door and covered her mouth.
"Come in. Please. I've been sick over it all night."
She had a small tray on the table with two untouched cups of tea. She sat on the arm of a chair and began to cry.
It wasn't pretty crying. Her nose went red and her shoulders shook.
"She came to my room at two in the morning," Camille said. "Winifred. She stood over my bed and said she knew you'd found it."
"Found what?" I said.
"The papers. She said if I didn't bring them to her, my father would lose his council seat and my mother would be put out of the Roswell house."
