Chapter 19: Silver

Torin's POV

Joss carried her to the cottage, because I could not stop shaking long enough to.

An old woman from the Lowell families was waiting on the porch when we got there.

Joss had sent a runner ahead.

She was small and bent, and she had delivered half the valley.

She took one look at Orla's arm and said, "Salt, birch bark and a clean knife. Everyone out."

I stayed.

She looked at me for a long moment, and then she let me.

She cut the burn open on the kitchen table and drew the silver out in thin grey threads.

Orla screamed once and went limp.

I held her good hand through all of it.

The fever came at midnight.

Her skin was hot and dry, and she murmured in her sleep.

Every time she turned her head, my own chest twisted.

I could feel her.

That was new.

It came through the wolf, a faint pull behind my ribs, like a rope tied between two rooms.

I knew which side of the bed she was lying on without looking. I knew when the pain peaked.

"She'll live," the old woman said at three. "She has too much stubbornness not to."

"Will it scar?"

"She'll carry the line, yes. Silver doesn't forget."

I thanked her and walked to the porch.

Joss was sitting on the top step with the wire in his hands.

He'd brought it from the ford, wrapped in a handkerchief. A short curl of it, bright as a new coin.

"Look at the end," he said.

I took it.

The wire was cut clean.

A tiny stamp was pressed into the last inch of it, no bigger than a grain of rice.
