Chapter 25: The Healer's Patient

Winifred came to the Lowell hall at noon, in daylight, with the Elder at her side.

She walked up the lane in a grey coat, and behind her came a dozen of the tower's wolves.

Between two of them walked Camille.

She was in white. Her hair was brushed and her face was pale and clean, and she looked like a woman who had been ill.

The Lowell families came out onto the porch and stood in a row.

Joss met them at the gate with the cuff on his wrist and his jaw set.

"Healer," he said. "You're on Lowell ground."

"I am here on a healer's business," Winifred said. "Under the Elder's eye."

The Elder nodded without looking happy about it.

"A patient of mine was taken from her bed by force," Winifred said. "This morning she walked out of the lower rooms, because she was afraid for her life."

"She walked out over two drugged Lowell men," I said.

"She was feverish, Luna. She was delirious."

Camille lifted her head.

"I don't remember the stairwell," she said softly. "I remember a wolf on my back, and teeth."

Her voice shook, and she looked right at me.

"I said things in the stairwell. I would have said anything to make it stop."

A murmur went through the tower wolves behind her.

I felt Torin step up at my shoulder.

"You told the whole Hall about the silver," he said to Camille. "You told us who paid you."
