Chapter 30: Ask Me Again
He came to my gate three days after the Blood Moon, and he stopped on the road.
He had a bunch of late asters in one hand and a paper bag of apples in the other.
I was on the porch with a mug, in my mother's old cardigan.
The valley was mine, on paper, as of moonrise. The deed was in the kitchen drawer.
"May I come in?" Torin asked.
"It's my land."
"That's why I'm asking."
I let him stand there a minute longer than I needed to.
"Come in," I said.
He walked up the path, and put the asters in my hand, and the apples on the rail.
"Winifred is at the old summer house on the north road," he said. "Two guards, no phone. She asks for her wolf every night."
"And Camille?"
"Her father put her on a bus to a cousin in another state."
I nodded. It was the last I meant to hear of either of them.
Torin took a breath.
"I did a lot of thinking," he said. "I made a speech."
"Don't give me the speech."
"All right."
He put his hands in his pockets, took them out again, and looked at the floorboards.
"Marry me," he said.
I sat very still.
I had waited four years to hear him say that.
"No," I said.
He nodded slowly.
"All right."
"That's it?"
"You said no."
"You're supposed to ask again."
His eyes came up, and I saw the beginning of a smile.
"Would you like me to ask again?"
"I'd like you to ask me properly. You asked me the last time in a council hall, with a contract and a witness, and I said I do to the floor."
"You did," he said. "I remember."
"So here are my terms."
"Terms."
"One. I say it to your face, in my own words, in my own hall."
"Yes."
"Two. The seat sits in the valley. The tower is a place you work, not a place you sleep. The Lowell families do not go back to being guests in anybody's house."
