Chapter 32: Full Moon

The first full moon of December came up clear and white over the Lowell Valley.

By ten o'clock the whole pack was gathered in the pasture below my mother's cottage.

There were the nine families, and the six from the tower and their children, and sixty others who had come down from the city on foot.

Joss had brought a thermos of cocoa and a folding chair, and he was already complaining about his knees.

I stood at the front of them in my mother's cardigan, with the frost crunching under my boots.

My husband stood beside me.

The Elder had asked him that week if he would take the seat back to the tower.

Torin had said he would take it to the valley, and the Elder could visit if he liked.

The Elder had visited. He had stayed for dinner.

"Cold," Torin said now, and rubbed his hands.

"It won't be when you're running."

"I haven't run with a pack in my own skin in my life."

"You ran with me in October."

"That was your wolf, too."

He looked down at me.

"I'd like to know what mine can do."

"Then find out."

A small girl tugged at my sleeve.

She was twelve, with thin braids and a face I had known since she was born.
