Chapter 17: I'd Just Buy Another
Colson's father stood in the Dean's lobby with his coat still on.
He was a tall man with silver hair and a tan, and he looked me over from head to foot without a word of greeting.
Beside him stood an attorney in a navy suit with a leather folder.
"Ms. Marlow," he said. "I'm told you have been making my son look like a fool."
"Your son did that himself," I said.
The Dean, behind me, said nothing at all.
"My son is twenty-two, and he is easily led," his father said. "He withdrew a legitimate claim because a roomful of girls shamed him. I have no intention of honoring that. Fifteen thousand three hundred dollars of property was destroyed in your room."
"On my desk," I said. "Which was empty until your son asked to put his watch on it."
"My client's property was entrusted to a student who set a trap," the attorney said.
"I asked him if he was sure," I said. "He said he'd just buy another. He said he'd buy two."
"That's hearsay," the attorney said.
"It's on camera."
I took out my phone and played it.
Colson's voice came out tinny and cocky from the speaker.
*If my girlfriend broke my watch, I'd just buy another.*
His father's jaw moved.
"Where did you get that?"
"From the first night," I said. "Colson posted it himself. You can scroll."
The elevator dinged behind us.
Colson stepped out.
He was in a wrinkled sweatshirt and had not shaved.
Behind him came the RA, the girl from 3C, and half of the floor.
"Dad," he said.
"Colson, go upstairs. This is a legal matter."
