Chapter 22: In Her Own Voice
The hearing began at four, in the long room on the second floor of the administration building.
Seven people sat behind the panel table.
The Dean sat in the middle, with two professors on her left and a student representative on her right.
I sat at the end of the front row with Casper, the RA and the girl from 3C.
Colson sat behind us with his hands pressed between his knees.
Kelsey was not there.
She had said her piece to the board that morning and gone home with her mother.
Saskia came in last.
She wore the cream dress from the showcase, and she was holding her father's arm.
He was a broad man in a charcoal suit with a thick leather briefcase, and he did not look at any of us.
"Sir," the Dean said. "You are here as counsel?"
"As her father, and as counsel," he said. "I'd like to put two objections on the record."
"Go ahead."
"First, the recordings are inadmissible. They were obtained by a student, in a private dorm, without consent."
"The lounge is a common area," the Dean said. "The student who recorded it had the dorm's posted permission. The IT office certified the files. Next."
"Second, my daughter is a victim here. A mentally ill girl and a vindictive roommate dragged her into their quarrel."
"She paid for four attacks," I said.
My voice carried farther than I expected.
"Ms. Marlow, you'll have your turn," the Dean said.
"She paid for four attacks," I said again, to her father. "I didn't invite myself into this. I woke up one night to my desk lamp coming down on my laptop."
He turned and finally looked at me.
