Chapter 6: Nine Days

"Then she's sick," I said, "and a sick person needs a doctor, not me."

The dean tilted her head. "Go on."

"I'm not asking you to punish her," I said. "I'm asking you to test her."

Kelsey's mother laid her hand flat on the folder.

"My daughter has been tested," she said. "Her condition is documented."

"At fourteen," I said. "That's seven years ago. She's smashed my laptop, my drive and my suit since then, and every time she walks to the same desk."

"Sleepwalking is not logical," her mother said.

"Then it won't mind a sleep study," I said.

The dean wrote something on her pad.

"The health center has a monitored sleep lab," she said. "Eyes, brain waves, movement. Ms. DeCourcy sleeps there for one night with a technician."

"That's invasive," her mother said sharply. "She's been through enough."

"It's fine, Mom," Kelsey said.

Everyone looked at her.

She sat up straight in the chair and gave the dean a brave little smile.

"I want people to know I'm telling the truth," she said. "I'll do the study."

The dean nodded slowly. "The earliest night is in nine days."

"Nine days," I said.

"Until then," the dean said, "Ms. DeCourcy stays in her assigned room. Her letter requires familiar surroundings. Housing has no empty beds this month."

"So I sleep four feet from her."

"You may request a transfer," the dean said, "but there is none to give."

Saskia squeezed my knee under the table.

I kept my face still.

The door opened, and Colson walked in without knocking.

A man in a gray suit came in behind him.

The man had Colson's jaw and a briefcase in his left hand.

"Dean," the man said. "I'm Colson's father. This is our attorney."
