Chapter 21: Gran's Heart

I couldn't get my keys into the truck door.

Luke took them out of my hand.

"I'm driving," he said.

I didn't argue.

He drove the peninsula road faster than I've ever driven it, with both hands on the wheel and his jaw tight.

I held the folder in my lap the whole way.

The ambulance had beaten us to the hospital in town.

Megan was in the emergency room hallway in her pajamas and one of Gran's flannel shirts, with Gran's pocketbook over her arm.

She'd ridden in the back with her.

"She's awake now," Megan said, before I could ask. "She came around in the ambulance. She told the paramedic he drove like a tourist."

I laughed, and then I had to hold on to the wall.

Luke put his hand flat on my back.

He took it away again when I could stand.

The doctor came out at midnight.

She was young and tired and kind, and she didn't make me ask twice.

Gran's heart had a valve that was narrowing.

Badly. For a long time.

"She was diagnosed in April," the doctor said. "She was told she needed a valve replacement. She was given medication and a surgery date in June."
