Chapter 8: The Envelope
Katja's POV
On Thursday night at nine, someone knocked on the front door with the flat of a hand.
Taras was at the stove, stirring a pot of beet soup.
Anders was at the table doing a crossword in pen.
Abram was upstairs on the phone with the coach, Garnet was in the basement, and I was the closest to the door.
I opened it.
Brent stood on the porch in a white parka with the team crest on the chest, and snow blew across the boards behind him.
He had a brown envelope in his glove.
"Hi, Mar," he said.
"Get off the porch."
I saw Taras turn slowly from the stove.
"This is a letter from my father," Brent said. "Read it. I'll wait."
I didn't take it.
"You put me on the board in front of three thousand people," I said. "And you want me to read your letter."
"I wanted a laugh. You've been making everything a thing since September."
The word hit me low, under the ribs.
Abram was coming down the stairs behind me, slow and quiet, and I felt him stop on the bottom step.
Brent looked past my shoulder and smiled.
