Chapter 15: The Sealed Envelope
Caspar opened the flat door before I knocked.
He was in yesterday's sweater, with his hair standing up from his hands, and the lamp over the drafting table lit the room behind him.
The blinds on the big window were all the way up.
His copy of the contract lay open under the lamp, turned to the page with the signatures.
"Did you read paragraph twelve in September?" I said.
"No."
"Clive stood in my bar and told forty people you did."
"I know. You're shaking."
"Clive said there's an envelope in your drawer."
His face changed.
He crossed the room, pulled open the drawer under the drafting table, and took out a thick cream envelope.
His name was on the front, in a spiky hand, and a courier sticker was stuck across one corner.
The flap was still sealed.
"It came two weeks after the funeral," he said. "I put it in the drawer. I've looked at it every day since."
"You never opened it."
"I couldn't. If I read it, it was over. He was really gone and he'd said what he was going to say."
He held it out to me, flat on both palms.
"I don't think I can do it alone."
I took the envelope.
I slid my thumb under the flap, and the old paper came away with a dry little tearing sound.
