Chapter 13: Her Name on the Door

Behind me, the front door of Blair's townhouse opened.

Nathan came down the steps one at a time.

He didn't hurry. He stopped on the step above Mitchell, which made him the taller one by a full head.

"You want to say that again?" he said. "Slower. I'd like to remember it right."

Mitchell looked up at him.

"This is between me and Val."

"You just threatened to take a baby from a woman on bed rest. On a public street. In front of a house full of witnesses."

Nathan nodded at the windows.

Three women were standing at the glass with their coats on, watching us.

Mitchell saw them.

He buttoned his coat. He touched the pocket where the scan was.

"Think about what I said," he told me.

Then he walked to his car and drove away.

I held on to the iron railing.

My legs had started to shake.

"Sit," Nathan said.

"I'm not sitting on Blair Pendry's steps."

"Then sit in my truck."

He walked me to it. He put the seat back and turned the heater up and handed me a bottle of water from the cup holder.

I drank half of it.

"He's right," I said.

"About what?"

"All of it. No job. No home. A mother with a court date. I checked out of the hospital. A judge will look at me and look at him and it'll take five minutes."

Nathan was quiet for a while.

He was looking at the pink balloons.

"Then let's fix the first one," he said.

"What?"

"The job. Come work for me."

I laughed.

He didn't.

"I'm serious. My lead engineer quit in August to move to Denver. I've been doing her job and mine for two months, and I'm bad at hers." He turned to face me. "Lead engineer, Shaw Freight. Full salary. Health insurance from day one."

"Nathan."

"Your name on the door. On the website. On everything."

"I'm on bed rest."

"Then the job is in a chair."

"You can't hire me because you feel sorry for me."
