Chapter 32: The Lie Did
He stopped two steps below me.
Snow was landing in his hair and on the shoulders of his dinner jacket and not melting.
"I didn't sleep with her," he said. "That night. I never did."
"I heard it when you did."
"I married her for a night that didn't happen." He laughed, and it came out wrong. "Almost two years. My whole life, for a night on a sofa in my shoes."
"You didn't stay for the night," I said. "You stayed for the contract. You told me so yourself, in my mother's kitchen. She has it on her phone."
He looked down at the steps.
Inside, through the glass doors, I could see the ballroom lights. People standing in knots. Phones held up.
"Can I see her?" he said.
"Through my lawyer. In daylight. With my mother in the room."
"That's all?"
"That's more than your mother was going to give me."
He nodded slowly.
He reached for his wrist and unbuckled the silver watch.
The one I'd bought him with my first paycheck.
He held it out to me.
"Keep it," I said.
"I don't want it."
"I know. Keep it anyway."
The doors opened behind him.
Blair stood in the doorway in her white gown, with his black coat over her arm.
The bump was still under the dress.
"Mitch," she called. "You'll freeze. Come inside."
He looked at her.
He looked at me.
Then he went back up the steps, and she put the coat around his shoulders, and the doors closed on both of them.
Nathan's truck pulled up at the curb with my mother in the front seat.
I went down the steps and got in.
The hearing on Monday morning was cancelled at eight-ten by a clerk on the phone.
Blair walked into the Front Street station at ten, through the front door, on her father's arm.
The complaint against my mother was withdrawn within minutes.
