We came home on Sunday at four, with the sun already low on Linden Street.
Hannelore's car was at the curb.
She sat in the passenger seat in her church coat, with a round tin on her lap.
Papa sat behind the wheel with the engine off.
Jonas stopped our car at the end of the driveway.
"She's been calling since Thursday," he said.
"I know. You let it ring."
"I let it ring," he said.
"Are you going to let her in?"
He looked at his hands.
"I want you to decide," he said. "It's your house. Your grandmother's. You decide who comes into Oma's kitchen."
I thought about that.
It was the first time anyone in his family had been made to wait on my step.
"I'll open the door," I said. "That's all I'm promising."
Annelise had the baby in the front room, with the dog asleep on the rug.
