Chapter 23: The Other Table
My grandmother's dining table seats six if nobody minds elbows.
On the first Sunday of January it had a cloth on it, a roast I'd burned a little at one end, and five places set.
The sixth place had a chair pushed in and no plate.
Papa came at five to one, in his Sunday jacket, carrying a green bean casserole in both hands.
Annelise came at one, with the dog and a bottle of sparkling cider.
She hung her coat on the hook by the door, and took the baby out of Jonas's arms without asking.
The baby let her.
"Where is Mutti?" Jonas asked.
Papa looked at his watch.
"She said one."
"It's one."
"She said one o'clock, not one-fifteen," Papa said gravely, and the corner of his mouth twitched.
We sat.
We did not wait for her, because I had decided we would not.
Jonas carved, badly, with the knife held the way his grandfather had taught him.
