Chapter 11: The Box

I asked her that night, alone, in the study with the framed photograph of my mother's diner.

"Camille was trying to hurt you," Eleanor said.

She sat behind her desk in her birthday pearls, with a cold cup of tea and her cane across her knees.

"She said you knew twelve years ago."

"I learned of the swap last month. The records are in the trust file. Ask Nathan."

Her eyes held mine without blinking.

She had a voice like a teacher's.

I thought of the clerk, on a mattress in Doraville, saying those words.

"Of course," I said. "Thank you, Grandmother."

I walked out with my back straight.

Nathan was waiting in the hall in the dark.

"She's lying," I said.

"I've worked for her ten years," he said. "When Eleanor lies, she stops blinking. She never blinked once tonight."

We drove to the tower in his car at midnight, with no one watching.

The family office sat on the thirty-seventh floor behind a steel door with a keypad and a lock.

He used the key.

The lights came on in a long, windowless room lined with gray cabinets.

A single table stood in the middle, with a box on it.

It was an ordinary banker's box, with a label in an assistant's neat print.

S. BULLOCH, it said.

My knees went.

Nathan caught my elbow.

"Sophia."

"Open it."

He did.

Inside were folders, hundreds of pages, each stamped with a month and a year.

I took the top one out.

MONTHLY WELFARE CHECK, it said. SUBJECT: S. BULLOCH, DECATUR.

Below that, in boxes, someone had listed my address, my job, my health, my bank balance.

The notes were typed in a flat clerical voice.

Subject's mother ill. No contact, per instructions.

Subject's mother deceased. No contact, per instructions.

Subject married. Husband W. Berrien, attentive. No action.
