Chapter 20: The Gala

The Trezevant Hotels gala filled the tower's ballroom with four hundred guests and a hundred chandeliers.

I wore a red dress I had bought myself, off a rack in Decatur, with eighty-four dollars of my own money.

It was the first thing I had owned in weeks that nobody had picked out for me.

Rhona walked in beside me in emerald silk with her braid pinned up and her eyes on every door.

"Any minute now," she said.

"Stop smiling."

"I can't. It's a gala and a trap, and I've got a good seat for both."

Three men in dark suits stood by the service doors with the stillness of men who were not waiters.

One of them was the detective's partner.

The detective herself sat at a table by the pillar, in a black dress, with a glass of water.

Nathan stood against the far wall in a tuxedo.

He did not come over, as we had agreed, and he did not look away from me either.

It felt like standing too near a lit stove.

"Breathe," Rhona said again, softly.

Eleanor was already on the dais, in a silver gown, leaning on her cane.
