Chapter 4: Dawn in the Moon Hall

By dawn the whole pack was in the hall, because the law says any wolf may speak at the morning assembly.

Cade sat at the head table with a plate of bacon in front of him.

Odette sat beside him in my chair.

She had put on my winter shawl, the grey one I had left in the cottage.

I walked down the aisle between the tables with Gwen on one side and Joss on the other.

Behind us, two scouts carried the starving warrior on a stretcher.

Cade lowered his fork.

"The healer's patients belong in the infirmary," he said. "And you were told to be gone by midnight."

"I'm not here for me," I said. "I'm here to speak."

"You have no standing."

"I'm still a member of this pack, and so is he."

I nodded to the stretcher.

The eldest elder, the gray woman, raised a hand from her seat. "The law holds. Let her speak."

Cade's mouth went thin.

I turned to face the tables.

"For a year, I signed a supply order every week for our warriors on the front," I said. "Food, blankets, medicine, boots. Every crate was paid for and counted."

"Joss Merrin came home last night with this man. Tell them what he told you, Joss."

Joss stepped forward and pulled a strip of cloth from his coat.

He read the names written on it, one by one, in a flat voice.

There were eleven.

A murmur ran through the hall, and it was not the sound I had heard the night before.

A woman near the front pressed her hand over her mouth.

Her son was on the front lines.

"That's a lie," Odette said, in a small clear voice. "Alpha, he's lying."

She stood up out of my chair.

"Joss left his post, and he's covering for it. And Rhiannon paid him to say this to get back at us."

"Paid him with what?" I asked. "You took my coat, Odette."
