Chapter 6: The Lycan Court Hears It

The Lycan throne hall was cut from grey stone, and it was full by noon.

Two hundred Lycans filled the benches, and every one of them was bigger than any wolf I had ever known.

The Lycan King sat on a plain iron chair at the far end.

He was white-haired and heavy, with Soren's grey eyes, and he had listened to the whole story without once interrupting.

I stood in the middle of the floor with Joss and Gwen on either side of me.

On the far side of the hall stood Cade and Odette.

They had ridden through the night under treaty safe-conduct.

Cade had changed into formal black.

Odette wore a pale grey dress and had put a white flower in her hair.

"Your Majesty," Cade said, "we come in good faith to ask for justice."

"Speak."

"Rhiannon Stanhope was our Luna. She stole from the pack's war chest and the pack's treasury seal, and your son has given her refuge."

"I want her returned for judgment, as the treaty says."

"The seal is on my desk," I said. "Where I left it, as you ordered."

"It was gone when we looked," Odette said, and her voice shook.

"Because you took it, Odette."

"Majesty, she's twisting everything."

"Then let her twist it," the King said. "I have time."

I took one step forward.

"Majesty, ask her where the wagons went," I said. "Every one left my gate heading north."

"She sold them south," Odette said at once, quick and clear. "At the market towns, to line her own pockets. We've found the buyers."
