Chapter 13: The Vote

The deputy held out her hand, and the gray-bearded man gave her Bree's list.

She read it standing under the motel's yellow light, with forty bikers breathing behind her.

"Dates, amounts, and what each one was for," she said. "Who wrote this?"

"A witness," Cade said. "She'll come in tomorrow and sign it."

"And this is the club's money."

"Mine and theirs," said Cade. "Garage and bar, since spring."

Travis laughed.

It came out too loud, and nobody laughed with him.

"This is a setup," he said, to the circle. "He's been wanting me gone since I got the door. You know what he's like. He hands a girl a pen and you all clap."

"Travis," said the gray-bearded man.

"I put two years into this club."

"You put your hand in the till for six months."

"Prove it."

"I just did," said the deputy, and turned a page. "Mr. Doyle, there's a line here for forty-one hundred dollars in July. The bar's deposit slip for that week is stapled to the back."

Travis stopped laughing.

He looked at me.

I was standing barefoot on wet asphalt in Cade's shirt, and I held his eyes and did not look away.

"The club doesn't need a courtroom to decide this part," the gray-bearded man said. He turned and faced the half circle. "This is a club matter before it's a county one. Hands. Does Travis Doyle keep any claim on this club, its money, or its name?"
