Chapter 26: The Coffee Can

Ginny's kitchen smelled of burnt toast and nobody ate.

It was past ten, and the whole club had followed us down the hill and filled the clubhouse next door, and the noise of it came through the wall.

Inside, there were five of us at the table.

I kept hearing it in my head, Willa Marie, said warmly on the cold headland, and I did not know yet where to put it.

Ginny sat with both hands wrapped round Rory's wrist, as if he might get up through the floor.

Cade sat next to him.

Rory had a bag of frozen peas on his lip, and he told it in a low voice, with his eyes on the table.

"The night I went off the road, I wasn't alone out there. There was a truck behind me and I took the corner too fast."

"Whose truck?" Cade said.

"I don't know. I don't remember. That's the point." He pressed the peas to his mouth. "I remember the water. Then a trawler hauled me out near Astoria. I'd lost the vest, my wallet, my name."

"For five years," I said.

He looked at me.

"Two years in a hospital and a halfway house," he said. "Nobody was looking for a man named John. Then in March I saw a Black Harbor Riders sticker on a truck at a gas station, and I knew it. All of it came back at once."

"March," said Cade.

"I wanted to come home. I couldn't." His voice cracked. "You'd buried me, Cade. I thought, what do I come back to? A man who got a new life and a brother with a coffee can? I was scared. I got on the bike three weeks ago. I made it to the pullout today."
