Chapter 27: Bylaw Four

On Monday night the clubhouse was so full that men sat on the pool table.

The gray-bearded man stood at the bar with a new mallet.

It was a plain wooden one from the hardware store, and Ginny had written CRAB 2 on the side in marker.

"Bylaw four," he said, and the room settled.

He read it from the club's black book in a flat voice.

"A patched member declared dead who returns within seven years takes back his seat, with the club's vote to confirm."

"Five years," said someone near the door. "He's in the window."

"Any member can speak against," said the gray-bearded man. "Speak now."

Nobody did.

I stood against the back wall next to Bree, with a paper cup of Ginny's coffee going cold in my hand.

Rory stood at the front in a borrowed clean shirt, and he looked like a man waiting for a sentence.

He did not look like a man who knew what the answer would be.

That was what made it work.

"Hands," said the gray-bearded man. "For Rory Donohue's seat."

Every hand in the room went up.

The roar that followed shook the cannery windows.

Men crossed the floor and grabbed him, slapped his back, put him in headlocks, and a big man at the front lifted him straight off the ground and wept openly into his shoulder.

Ginny put the patch into his hands, and he held it up to the light and said, "I think it shrank."
