Chapter 15: A Gentle Way Out
"Sit down, darling," said a voice behind me. "You're swaying."
Dorian stepped out of the private washroom in the corner of the office, drying his hands on a linen towel.
He wore his gray suit, rested and composed.
"Out," he said to the lawyer, pleasantly. "Both of us have some family to settle."
"I'm not leaving her," the lawyer said.
"You are," Dorian said, "unless you'd like the bar association to read the letter I wrote about you this morning."
The lawyer's mouth worked.
He looked at me.
"Go," I said. "I'll be all right."
I wasn't sure it was true.
He went out and left the door open a hand's width, and I heard him standing in the hall.
Dorian shut it.
"There," he said. "Isn't this nice."
He sat on the edge of my father's old desk, which the lawyer had kept, and he crossed his ankles.
The gold watch slid down his wrist.
The crack in the glass caught the lamp.
"You took that out of his casket," I said.
"It was going to waste."
"You're disgusting."
"I'm practical." He smiled. "You've had a hard two weeks, and I'm not angry. The doctor has a place by the lake, with a garden and a pond. Three weeks, Calla. Quiet. Nobody sees you."
"And then?"
"And then you sign a few things, and we're married by a judge in a little room with flowers, and the board never hears a word."
"I'm not going."
"You are." He said it gently. "The alternative is the public hearing. The deputy has already sworn he saw you screaming in a stranger's yard. Do you want your father's board to watch you say otherwise?"
"That never happened."
"It will have."
The doctor opened his leather bag on his lap.
I saw a syringe in its case, a small glass vial, and a pair of white soft restraints folded flat.
