Chapter 24: Callie Ross

I turned twenty-six at the long table, with egg on my fork.

It was eight in the morning, and the whole club sat around me in their cuts, eating Mabel's biscuits.

My father's lawyer sat at the end with a folder and a fountain pen.

He had driven up the Gap at dawn in a suit and a pair of borrowed boots, because the road had eaten his dress shoes at the second bend.

"Ready?" he said.

"What do I do?"

"You sign your name on the line," he said. "Everything your father built becomes yours at the stroke of the pen. Every hotel, every account, every building."

"The land in Harlan Ford?"

"Page eleven. I flagged it."

I looked down the table.

Otis had his arms folded.

The bartender was grinning into his coffee.

Mabel stood at the stove with a spatula in her fist, pretending not to watch.

Rafe sat beside me with his splinted hand on his knee.

He didn't say a word.

He only put his good hand on the back of my chair.

I took the pen.

I thought of a girl who spent her whole life being kept out of the papers.

I thought of a boarding-school bed, and a man in a church whispering, and the sleeve torn off the arm of a stranger who wouldn't make a phone call.

I signed.

Calla Caruthers.

The signature came out bold.

"Which name is that?" the prospect asked, from the end of the table.

"Both," I said.

The lawyer capped the pen and wiped his eyes with a napkin.
