Chapter 18: It's Mine

Trenton caught up with us in the hotel's parking garage.

Nan had already gone ahead in the car with the retired teachers, who insisted on escorting her.

I was waiting for the elevator with Miles's jacket around my shoulders and my shoes in my hand.

The wedding dress was dragging on the concrete.

"Simone!"

His footsteps ran toward us across the level.

He had lost his bow tie somewhere, and his shirt hung open at the throat.

"Stay there," Miles said, and stepped in front of me.

"Miles, no, please, let me talk to my fiancée."

"I'm not your fiancée," I said.

I stepped around Miles.

I wanted to look at him in the light.

Under the garage lamps he looked older, and smaller, and very frightened.

"Cor." He put out both hands. "Just five minutes. Please."

"You have until the elevator comes."

"Okay." He nodded fast. "Okay. I messed up. I know I messed up. But the stuff in that chat was a joke, you know how Krista and I talk, it's all gallows humor."

"It's the best thing about her."

"I meant you're loyal. I meant that you stick." He wiped his face. "I love you. I do. I love you, and you're pregnant, and I'm going to be a father."

"Don't use that word."

"It's mine, Cor. It's my baby."

The elevator dinged behind me.

I did not turn.

"You're right," I said. "It's your baby."

His face broke open with hope.

"But it's mine," I said.

"What does that mean?"

"It means you don't get to hold it, or name it, or put it on a stream." I kept my voice low. "It means you asked a friend to announce it for content."

"I didn't mean it like that."

"You said it was a great storyline."

"I was in shock!"

"You were happy," I said. "You were happier than you were about the baby."
