Chapter 8: One Chance

I decided to give him one chance.

It was Wednesday afternoon, and I came to the loft while he was at the office.

I stood in the kitchen and waited.

I wanted to tell him myself, before Krista could.

I wanted to see his face, with nobody else there.

If he cried, or laughed, or put his hand on my stomach, I would know something I didn't know now.

I had not been able to stand the smell of coffee for three weeks, and he had not noticed.

I took it and put it down.

"Trenton, I need to tell you something."

"Oh no." He grinned. "Is this about Saturday? Because I've got it handled."

"I'm pregnant."

"Ten weeks."

"The baby's fine. It has a heartbeat."

"Wow." He put his coffee on the counter and laughed, a short breath of a laugh. "That's, wow. Okay."

I waited.

I waited for him to cross the kitchen.

He rubbed the back of his neck instead.

"You know what's actually kind of perfect?" he said. "The timing."

"The timing."

"Think about it. Saturday. The wedding. Pipe's going to flip." His whole face had opened up.
