Chapter 19: The Lobby

"I don't want anything from you that you can hand across a table," I said.

Geoffrey waited.

"You said I was a leech in front of three thousand people. Say what you did to the same people."

His mouth went thin.

"You want a statement."

"I want the lobby, at four o'clock, with the staff in it."

He nodded slowly.

"Then that's where I'll do it."

At four, the lobby of the Willoughby tower held more people than it had ever held.

They stood on the marble in rows, three and four deep, and up the curved stairs to the mezzanine.

I saw accountants and engineers, and the women from the cafeteria with their hairnets in their pockets.

At the back, along the wall by the loading dock, stood the night staff, in jackets and uniforms, who had come in on their day off.

Rowan stood at my shoulder, because he had not left it since two.

Geoffrey climbed three steps of the stairs so the room could see him.

He didn't use a microphone.

"On Monday night I let my fiancée call Ms. Clifford a parasite in front of you," he said. "I agreed with her."

The lobby was so quiet I could hear the revolving door.

"I was wrong, and I wasn't wrong by accident. She was right about one thing. None of you knew what Ms. Clifford did for this company, and neither did I, because I never asked."
