Chapter 19: Section Nine
The vault was a closet behind the front office with an iron door and a bulb on a string.
Ruthanne had cleared the little table in the middle of it, and the three of us stood around the rusted tin.
My father snored across the grass in the caretaker's cottage.
I had left my mother a note and Mal had left the lodge door on the latch.
"Ninety-four years," Ruthanne said. "Nobody opens the cornerstone box. It sits behind the ledgers."
"Why did you?"
"Because the printed charter in the Head's desk is a reprint from 1962, and I got curious about what they reprinted."
She pried the lid with a butter knife.
Inside lay a folded sheet of thick cream paper, brittle as a leaf, with a seal pressed into the bottom.
She lifted it out with both hands and spread it under the bulb.
Augusta Lindenmere's signature ran across the foot of it in black ink, steep and fierce.
