Chapter 23: Back

Tania sat at my kitchen table at seven in the morning, in her camel coat, with three phones and a cup of my bad coffee.

Mal stood at the counter in his shirtsleeves with his arms crossed.

"The company votes on a merger with a drone maker at noon," Tania said. "The new board wants you in the chair to bless it."

"Or they want me out of the way," said Mal.

"Both. I told them you'd decide in person."

He looked at me.

I put down my mug.

"If you want to go," I said, "go. I'll hold the east wing."

"I don't want to go."

"I know. Go anyway, and say what you want."

"What if I want to come back?"

"Then come back."

He crossed the kitchen and kissed me once, hard, in front of her.

"Bring Edie," said Tania. "They'll behave better."

The boardroom had a long glass table and fourteen chairs, and a view of a river.

The directors rose when Mal came in, in his charcoal suit, with his scarred hand at his side.

Their faces had the look people wear at a stranger's funeral who suddenly recognize the dead man.

I sat in a chair against the wall.

The man at the head of the table, silver and expensive, gave a speech about legacy and drones and an eight-billion-dollar future.
