The Allegheny Grand ballroom held six hundred people on Saturday night.
It was the same room where I had turned out my pockets, and it was bigger with the lights on full.
White tablecloths, gold chairs, a stage at the far end, and over the stage a screen the size of a barn door.
The screen read *Laughlin Foundation Winter Dinner*.
I stood at the side door in the green dress Winifred had sent, with my hair pinned back and a microphone clipped under my collar.
Nolan stood three feet away, where I could see him.
"Still sure?" he said.
"No."
"Good. That means you're paying attention."
Through the gap in the curtain I watched my father arrive.
He came in a rented tuxedo that pulled across his belly, with his hair slicked flat and a smile on his face.
He shook hands with a banker.
He told a woman in diamonds how proud he was of his daughter.
My stepmother sat alone at a back table in a black dress, with her purse in her lap.
