Chapter 6: Forty-Nine Deposits
"Mother," Nolan said. "How do you know his name?"
Winifred Laughlin walked into the hall without being asked and leaned on her cane.
She looked older than her sixty-one years, and she did not look away from my son.
"Because I have known about Benjamin since he was a week old," she said.
The hall went silent.
Benji looked at me, and I picked him up, and held his head against my neck.
The housekeeper had appeared at the top of the stairs in her robe.
"Would you take him up and read him a story?" I called to her. "Please."
She took him gently.
He waved at the old woman over her shoulder.
"Bye, lady."
"Goodnight, darling," Winifred said, and her voice caught.
When the bedroom door shut upstairs, Nolan took a step toward his mother.
"Say that again."
"I have known for four years and nine months."
"You knew I had a son."
"I knew a girl named Bridget Maslowski had written to the Laughlin Foundation in August, claiming to be pregnant." Winifred's chin lifted. "I read it on a Tuesday. I hired a man the same week."
"You hired a detective instead of telling me."
"You were in Singapore, and then you were engaged to Daphne Merryman, whose father holds eleven percent of our shares. I wanted to know if the girl was telling the truth before I wrecked everything."
"You wanted to know," Nolan said, and the words shook.
"Yes."
"For four years."
"The detective sent me a report each spring. A healthy boy. A mother who was working. A father at home who wanted no contact."
I stepped forward.
"My father wanted no contact," I said.
"He told the detective you refused our help. He said you didn't want a cent, and you'd be insulted by an offer."
"Is that what the detective said?"
