Chapter 11: Rain

The lawyer told us the rest of the recording before he left.

"She says that if you won't stay quiet, Miss Lothrop, she'll have you declared unfit," he said. "A signed letter from a friendly doctor, and you live where she tells you to."

"Let her try," Stuart said.

The lawyer drove back to the city.

By the time the baker locked the front door, the rain had started, and it came down so hard the street went white.

The only inn in Cold Spring was on the other side of the lake road.

A branch had already come down across it.

"You can't drive in this," I said.

Stuart stood at the foot of the back stairs with his wet coat over his arm.

"I'll sleep in the car."

"You will not."

I climbed three steps, and I turned and looked down at him.

"Term three," I said. "I sleep under my own roof. It doesn't say who else can stay under it."

His eyes went dark.

"Willa."

"Ask me."

"I'm coming up."

"Yes," I said. "Please."

The room above the bakery had a bed, a lamp, one chair and a window streaming with water.

The radiator knocked twice, as it always did.

I stood in the middle of the floor and could not think what to do with my hands.

Stuart closed the door behind him and did not move away from it.

"For three years I stood outside a door like this one," he said.

"You're inside now."

He crossed the room in three steps.

His hands came up, and he held my face the way he had held it on the pier, thumbs on my cheekbones.

"I'm going to kiss you."

I took the front of his shirt in both fists and pulled him down to me.

His mouth was warm and shaking.

I kissed him back as hard as I could, and the lamp, the rain and the room went out of my mind.

He made a low sound against my lips, and I felt it in my stomach.

We had made love once, and neither of us had properly kissed.
