Chapter 13: Page Nine
Odile led us into the library and closed the doors on two hundred people.
The room smelled of leather and old paper, and a fire burned low in the grate.
She sat in a wing chair with her cane across her knees.
"Read it standing or sitting," she said. "Most people sit."
I stood.
The envelope held a photocopy of a will, with a staple through the corner of the ninth page.
I turned to it under the lamp, and Rhys stayed by the door and did not come closer.
ARTICLE NINE, it said, in the flat language of lawyers.
On the first anniversary of my death, my shares in Halloway Holdings pass to the wife of whichever grandchild of mine is then married.
So do my seat and my control of the Halloway Foundation.
The marriage must have been made after the date of this will.
She shall hold them in her own name.
Her husband shall hold nothing by it.
Until that day the company is held in trust, and if no such marriage stands, control passes to the vice chair.
