Chapter 17: The Old Woman
Odile was in the library when I got to Harrow House on Tuesday morning.
The fire was lit, and her cane leaned against the arm of her chair.
Dorian's car was gone from the drive.
"Mrs. Halloway," I said.
"Ms. Marwick." She did not look surprised. "Sybil telephoned."
I put the sheet on the desk between us.
Sybil had photographed it for me in the dark of a parked car, and I had printed it at the lab at six.
It was the first draft of page nine, typed, with the margins crowded with handwriting.
The notes were small and upright and very careful.
I had seen that hand once before, on a cream envelope with my name on it.
"Who wrote this?" I asked.
Odile looked at the page for a long time.
"I did," she said.
I had expected an argument, and it knocked the air out of me.
"The old chairman signed it," she said. "He signed what I put in front of him, as he did for fifty years."
"But I wrote the clause, and I wrote it for the reason you are thinking."
