Chapter 16: Thursday

The therapy office was on the second floor of a clinic off Main Street.

It had a rubber floor and a window onto the parking lot.

Ray sat at a low table in the middle of the room in his Dragons cap.

His left sleeve was rolled to the elbow, and on the end of his arm was a new hand.

It was matte gray, with five jointed fingers, and a strap ran up his forearm to a harness at his shoulder.

The settlement had paid for it, Ray had told me in the truck lot.

Every dollar of it came out of the company's court money, and none of it came out of Cal.

"I didn't want his name on any part of it," he'd said. "I wanted the court's."

Cal and I sat in two plastic chairs in the corner.

He had his hands on his knees.

He had not spoken since we parked.

The therapist set a paper cup on the table in front of Ray.

"Pick it up, but don't crush it."

Ray closed the gray fingers on the cup, and it went flat with a dry crackle.

"Again."

He picked up a second cup, and it went flat.

He picked up a third.

He swore at the fourth, short and quiet, and the therapist said, "Again."

I watched without meaning to.

By the twentieth cup, Ray's jaw was tight and sweat had come out along his cap.
