Chapter 17: The Dock Fix

The warehouse on Saturday was a different animal from the warehouse on a weekday.

The big bay doors stood open, the line was running short-handed, and the cold came in off the lot and sat on the concrete.

I parked on the shoulder across the road again, at a quarter to six.

This time Cal didn't ask me to stay in the truck.

"Come to the gate," he said. "You don't have to come in. Just stand where I can see you."

The maintenance lead was waiting at the gate with a toolbox.

He was a broad man of about fifty with a gray mustache and a company jacket with the name patch picked off.

He looked at Cal and then at me, and he didn't offer a hand.

"This is Dee," Cal said. "She runs the gym where I work."

"I know who she is," the lead said. "My cousin's in her Thursday class."

He turned and walked into the building, and Cal followed.

I stood at the fence with my coffee, and from there I could see most of the floor.

The man in front of belt six wore a floor manager's vest.
