Chapter 20: The Cameras

"Turn it off," I said.

My mother turned it off, and in the dark the house hummed.

Cal was already outside on the porch with his phone to his ear.

I watched him through the screen door.

He listened for a long time, and then he said, "You put her gym's name on a banner without asking her."

He listened again.

"No. I'm hanging up, Gavin. I'll talk to you Saturday."

He came inside with his jaw working.

"The league signed it," he said. "The amateur league owns the card.

"Gavin bought the broadcast rights in October, back when I was still saying yes."

"Can they run it?"

"The permit's in their name. They can run it on your floor."

"On my floor."

"I could pay them to cancel it."

"No."

"I know," he said. "I wanted you to hear me say I knew."

The junior show was the only night of the year my kids climbed into a real ring with a real crowd.

I wasn't taking it from them to spite a man in white sneakers.

"We hold the show," I said. "Ellender's name stays off every wall."

On Saturday night the gym was packed to the doors.
