Chapter 21: Exhibition

The bell rang, and the man the size of a refrigerator walked out of his corner.

Cal wore my father's red wraps under borrowed gloves.

I saw the K on the thumb loop flash as he put his hands up.

Frank had matched him with a retired heavyweight who boxed Tuesday nights for exercise and weighed forty pounds more.

It was an exhibition, with headgear and no judges, and all it asked of Cal was to stay on his feet for three rounds.

The first round he got hit in the face four times.

Each time the crowd groaned, and each time he reset his feet.

Between rounds he dropped on the stool with blood on his lip and a stupid happy look in his eyes.

I knelt on the apron and held the water bottle to his mouth.

"What do you see?" I said.

"Fists."

"Look at his face."

"I'm looking."

"Look up, Cal. He drops the right shoulder before the jab. Tell me you saw it."

"I saw it."

"Then use it."

The bell rang.

In the second round he slipped a jab and sent a short right into the big man's ribs, and the sound cracked through the hall.

The crowd came up out of the folding chairs.

I heard Ray bellow from the front row, "Hands up, Ellender! Hands up!"

I heard the little girl shout, "Go, Mister!"
