Chapter 22: Hour One Ninety-Nine
On Sunday the gym was closed, and Ray Dutka was waiting on the front step at ten in the morning.
He wore his Dragons cap and a Sunday coat, and the gray hand hung at his side.
"I need the bag room," he said. "And I need the suit."
Cal came up the sidewalk behind me with two coffees and a split eyebrow.
He took in the look on Ray's face and set the coffees down on the step.
"Ray."
"Ellender. Hold the pad."
The two of them went into the ring together, and I stayed on the apron, because I always stayed on the apron.
Cal slid the red mitts on his hands.
Ray set his feet and threw a left with the new gray hand, a stiff clumsy hook, and the mitt barely moved.
"Again," Cal said.
He threw it again.
He threw it thirty times, and each one was a little cleaner.
By the thirty-first the gray fingers were working inside the glove, and the punch cracked on the leather.
Ray stopped, breathing hard, sweat running down under his cap.
