Chapter 12: The Envelope

"What did she take?" Ansel said.

"I don't know."

"You said it at the brunch. You said it right to her face."

"Rosalind told me she kept a box," I said. "That's all I knew. I never knew what was in it."

He stood in the cold room with his shirt open and his phone in his hand.

Hal's voice was still tinny in the speaker.

"Go upstairs," Ansel said. "I'll be there in a minute."

I went up.

I didn't ask him what he was going to do.

I lay awake in the dark for a long time.

At some point I slept, and I never heard him come in.

I woke at three.

The bed was empty on his side, and the sheet was cold.

There was light under my bedroom door.

I pulled on a robe and walked down the hall.

He sat at my kitchen table with one lamp on.

My bag was in front of him, open on the wood.

I had taken the envelope out of the safe on Sunday night.

A safe that someone had already tried to crack wasn't a safe anymore.
