Ansel's POV

She stood on the landing with her back to the wall and her arms crossed over her borrowed green dress.

I stopped three steps above her.

I'd rehearsed a speech in the car. It was gone.

I had her coat over my arm, and I held it out.

"You left this," I said.

She took it. She didn't put it on.

"That was a lot of people," she said.

"Yes."

"You said my name to three hundred of them."

"You'd already said it to the press, and you said it better."

A small, wet sound came out of her. It was almost a laugh.

"I should have asked first," I said. "It was your secret, and I told it. I'm sorry for that."

"No." She shook her head. "I'd have said no, and I'd have been wrong. You made it easy for me."

"I made it public. That isn't the same as easy."

"Ansel."

"Let me finish, please."

She went quiet.

I came down the three steps, and stopped one below her, so our eyes were level.

"For two years I believed the worst of the best person I knew," I said. "I made you pay for my grief. I took what you offered, and I called it your fault."

"You were hurting."

"Don't do that. Don't give me the out."

She pressed her lips together.
