Chapter 4: Twelve Dollars a Dozen
The photo ran at six the next morning.
Fran held her phone up in the shop doorway before I'd even taken off my coat.
"Don't look," she said, and then she turned it around so I could.
It was a blurred shot through a van windshield.
Ansel stood in my doorway with his shirt torn open, and I stood behind him with my hair down and my skirt rucked at the waist.
The headline sat in red above it.
WIDOWER'S GRIEF FLING: BILLIONAIRE BUCKINGHAM AND HIS LATE WIFE'S BEST FRIEND.
"Two million views," Fran said. "In under an hour."
"Who took it?"
"Somebody who was parked outside your shop at eleven at night with a long lens, which is the only thing I know."
She put the phone down and looked at me.
"Okay," she said. "Is it true?"
"Yes."
"Okay." She nodded slowly. "Do you want me to kill him, or do you want me to make coffee?"
"Coffee."
"I can do both. I'm very organized."
She went to the back, and I stood among the buckets of dahlias and waited for my heart to stop.
It didn't.
By eight, there were five reporters on the sidewalk.
By nine, there were eleven, and a woman with a boom microphone had set up beside my window box.
Fran took a call, wrote on a pad, and held it up.
The pad said: Aldous Garden Club. 40 white roses. CANCELLED.
She took another call. Held up another page. Cancelled.
By ten there were four pages.
"That's thirty-one hundred dollars," Fran said, very calm. "Gone before lunch. Except the bride on Saturday. She says she doesn't care who you sleep with as long as the peonies are pink."
