Chapter 14: The Recording
"Then play it," I said.
"Here?" Lance's mother glanced around the ballroom, at the three hundred faces turned our way. "I wouldn't waste it on a room that's already eaten."
"You don't have it."
"I have it, and so does the Chicago Lantern. They've held it since Friday as a courtesy to me."
She looked at the little gold watch on her wrist.
"It goes up at one o'clock. I wanted you to hear it from me first, so you'd know whom to thank."
Torben stood, all six foot four of him, and she tipped her head back to look at him.
"You hold a room well, Mr. Rask," she said. "It isn't yours."
She walked out between the tables, and nobody stopped her.
I stood there with my hand on the back of my chair.
The wall clock said 12:58.
I did the only thing I could think of.
